Santa Cruz Area School Garden Bike Tour


Santa Cruz Area School Garden Bike Tour
Wednesday October 7th 2:00-5:00

Santa Cruz is home to some of the most stellar school
garden programs in the country.
Come on a bike tour to check a few out.

We will start out from the UCSC Farm Center on bikes and
visit the following gardens:

Westlake Elementary
Gateway K-8
Gault Elementary

If there is interest and time we can swing by the
Branciforte Small Schools Campus as well.

The bike tour will end just east of downtown Santa Cruz.

Composting Workshop this Saturday, October 3rd- and free lunch!



Come learn all about hot composting and worm composting systems from a Master Composter and our Compost Rangers!
The workshop is from 10:00 am-2:00 pm at the Sustainable Living Center located at the A Quad in the Village.
It's totally free and includes a hot lunch!

The Santa Cruz Area School Garden Open House is being organized as part of Life Lab's 30th Anniversary Celebration. This event is preceeding Life Lab's Annual Benefit in The Garden Classroom on September 12th from 4-7pm.

Planning the Six Plant Part Harvest: Creating & Sustaining Your School Garden

A healthy, year-round school garden is a critical component of a vibrant nutrition education program. Join Life Lab at the Garden Classroom to learn how to effectively manage a school garden so that students can enjoy an edible 6 plant part harvest. This workshop will provide essential tips and best practices for teachers that want to conduct garden-based nutrition education projects. Participants will learn how to:

* Identify easy-to-grow fruits and vegetables that can be harvested within the school year
* Utilize school gardens effectively for nutrition education
* Learn lessons and tips for consuming garden grown goodness with students and enhancing their nutritional knowledge and acceptance of a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Teaching in the Garden (Presented by CAFF & Life Lab)

A healthy, year-round school garden is a critical component of a vibrant nutrition education program. Studies have shown that kids who plant and grow vegetables are much more likely to eat them and be open to trying more varieties. Bringing nutrition education from the classroom into the garden setting can have a powerful effect on children's eating habits. In this workshop, school teachers and garden educators will gain more outdoor classroom management skills, and learn how to teach engaging garden based nutrition education lessons. Using the garden as an outdoor classroom, activities and lessons emphasizing nutrition, science and language arts will be shared. Tips for keeping children engaged and active in an outdoor setting will be emphasized. A healthy garden-based culinary treat will be prepared and shared.
